Fishing Rod: How To Choose It

Fishing rod: which to choose and for which technique

A fishing rod to fish “everything” does not exist but instead there can exist a fish that is fishing with all the reeds. The fishing rod is the loyal companion of every fisherman, the weapon with which every fight is faced with both a small fish and a trophy marlin. First of all, we need to understand the fishing techniques at sea and then adapt and acquire the most suitable material for your days on the boat or on the beach.

When it comes to fishing in the sea you must immediately make a difference between fishing from the boat and fishing from the ground.

The fishing rod to fish from the ground

The ground fishing is made by different techniques: surfcasting, spinning, fishing with floats or rock fishing.

The fishing rod for the boat

Fishing from the boat, on the other hand, foresees other totally different techniques: vertical jigging, light or heavy fishing, trolling, spinning fishing on the food or fishing for cephalopods.

How to choose the fishing rod

To be sure to choose a good fishing rod you must first know the fish species that we will go fishing to avoid having an oversized fish in the barrel that could endanger our equipment purchased with so much sweat.

The rod for ground fishing

Surfcasting fishing has long reeds ranging from 3.90 to 4.50 meters on average. These rods are solid and rigid and must allow you to launch your long distance terminals, over the waves where the fish graze. The typical fish of surfcasting fishing is the sea bream.

Spinning fishing rod

Spinning fishing from the ground, on the other hand, includes long rods up to 3 meters long. A spinning rod must be light and fast and allow us to cast our artificial ones at a great distance. Each spinning rod has a different weight that equals the maximum weights of the artificial we can throw. The typical fish of the spinning fishing from the ground is the sea bass but also barracudas, greenhouse fishes and tuna can be easily captured with casting-type artificial jig.

Fishing with floats

This fishing provides long and light rods, able to fight fish with the sole strength of the stem. Often these rods have more ramps of rings than other fishing dogs to get more sensitivity when the fish approaches your bait. The target species are bream, sea bass, sea bream, mormore, leccie ect.

Rockfishing

Rockfishing, on the other hand, is a rather modern fishing technique, this technique is nothing but a sort of spinning fishing but with light fishing tackle for fishing with gummy artificial fish typical of the rocky crust such as scorpionfish, bass , gobies, ect. A rockfishing rod must be sensitive and fast as well as being rather short. A rockfishing reed rarely exceeds 2.20m this to be more comfortable while searching for your prey in the canals or in the rocky ravines.

The boat fishing rod

Bolentino fishing rods are usually short and sturdy when it comes to deep fishing in search of dentex, pagri, congri or even big eyes and groupers. For light bolentino, instead, sensitive and light long rods from 1.80m to 2.40m are preferred. The light bolentino is a specific fishing technique to catch bream, pagelli, comb fish, bream and tanute.

The fishing pole for jigging fishing

The jigging rod is instead a long barrel from 1.50m to 1.90m. It is a sturdy and powerful reed capable of animating metal artificial jigs that can up to 300-400 grams. The fishing jig for vertical jigging is usually composed of two pieces (heel + stem) to resist fish such as dentex, amberjack or in extreme cases even tuna.

The trolling fishing rod

The trolling rods are short and sturdier. They must be able to tow both light weights as a live bait and at the same time capable of towing with lead down riggers weighing over kg. They can be ringed with normal rings or with pulley rings that allow a perfect sliding of the larger thread especially if we are looking for big fish like tuna or swordfish.

Spinning rod for tuna

The rods for spinning on tuna and other pelagic feeds are long rods between 2.20 and 2.80m They must be able to throw long distance lures to get inside the feeds and give a movement to the typical fish artifice forage. Only then will the tuna detach from the counter to come and taste your artificial. Spinning rods are usually made up of two parts but today there are more and more fishing rods made up of 4-5 elements to be transported by plane for fishing holidays.

The eging cane or squid canes

The reeds for fishing squids or reeds from eging are very soft and sensitive. They must be able to transfer the vibrations of the cephalopods in the barrel (which is quite difficult) and at the same time quick to pick up your prey before it can move away from the totanara.

Where to keep the fishing rod

After a fishing trip back home you will need to fix your fishing rod waiting for the next measure. The fishing rods are sturdy and resistant over time, for a longer life span the ideal will be to keep them in the scabbard or in the rods door away from moisture and heat sources. Many people tend to keep the fishing rod on the boat (I myself do it). The advice is not to leave them in the lockers but rather if you have a cabin let them rest in the scabbard. Attention, the rings of the fishing rod may undergo major shocks during navigation. To avoid this, use rubber bands to block the elements of the barrel.

How to clean fishing rods

Especially after a fishing trip at sea the fishing rods need to be washed and cleaned. First wash them with fresh water to prevent sea salt from affecting the rings and the aluminum parts. Dry them with a fiber cloth and leave them in the air for at least two hours before storing them in the scabbard

The transport of fishing rods by air

Fishing trips are for many a great passion and many fishermen love to bring their own material. This is why today some travel fishing rods were born. There are even easily transportable surf casting rods whose size, once removed, does not exceed one meter in length. In an airplane, therefore, the fishing rod can be transported in a hold bag and not in hand baggage. However, the rule does not apply to all companies. If you want to solve easily without paying any extra, buy a travel tube and board it in the hold like a suitcase. You will not risk anything and your material will arrive with you without any problem.
